Rythu Bima (Telangana Farmer Life Insurance)

Rythu Bima is a state-funded group life-insurance scheme for Telangana farmers, providing a uniform any-cause death cover to enrolled cultivators. The scheme was launched on 14 August 2018 by the Telangana State Department of Agriculture, with Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) as the underwriter.

Overview

Rythu Bima differs from crop insurance (Pmfby Crop Insurance) in that it covers the life of the farmer rather than the crop. The cover is uniform across enrolled members and is settled directly into the nominee's bank account on the farmer's death.

Eligibility

The scheme is open to Telangana-resident farmers aged 18 to 59 years (as of 1 July of the financial year) holding cultivable land in the state. Enrolment is processed through the Agriculture Extension Officer using land records and Aadhaar.

Benefit and structure

  • Cover amount: Rs 5 lakh, payable to the nominee on death of the enrolled farmer from any cause
  • Premium: approximately Rs 1,200 per farmer per year, fully borne by the state government
  • Age band: 18-59 years
  • Insurer: Life Insurance Corporation of India

Claims are typically settled within a fortnight of submission of death certificate and bank details of the nominee.

Implementation

The Department of Agriculture maintains the master roll of enrolled farmers and pays the annual premium en bloc to LIC. Field operations — enrolment, nominee updation and claim filing — are handled by Agriculture Extension Officers. The scheme complements the central PM Kisan Maan Dhan Yojana pension (see Pm Kisan Maan Dhan Yojana) and the state's investment-support transfer (see Rythu Bandhu Rythu Bharosa).
