Broflanilide (BASF Exponus)
Broflanilide is a meta-diamide insecticide from BASF, marketed in India as Exponus at 300 g/L SC (30% w/w). It is positioned as a resistance-management tool against fruit and shoot borer and thrips in chilli, with a novel mode of action distinct from existing diamides and pyrethroids.
Composition / Active ingredient
- Active ingredient: Broflanilide
- Formulation: 300 g/L SC (30% w/w)
- Chemical class: Meta-diamide
Mode of action
Broflanilide is a GABA-gated chloride channel allosteric modulator (IRAC Group 30). Unlike phenylpyrazoles such as Fipronil (Group 2B) which block GABA channels, broflanilide binds at a separate allosteric site and locks the channel in a closed state, preventing chloride influx. The result is uninhibited firing of the insect nervous system, leading to convulsions, paralysis and death. The novel binding site means no cross-resistance with Group 2B compounds.
Target use and dose
CIBRC label use in India is in chilli for control of fruit and shoot borer (Helicoverpa armigera) and thrips (Scirtothrips dorsalis). It also shows activity against Spodoptera and leaf miners. The product is positioned for use in rotation with diamides (Chlorantraniliprole, Cyantraniliprole Benevia) and spinosyns (Spinosad Spinetoram Larvicides) in resistance-management programmes.
Safety and regulatory status
Broflanilide was first registered globally in 2020 and approved by CIBRC in India shortly thereafter. As a Group 30 compound it should not be sprayed back-to-back with itself or with Fipronil-class chemistry, despite the different binding site, to limit GABA-receptor cross-pressure.
