Record-and-Replay Bird Scarer
A record-and-replay bird scarer is an audio device that broadcasts pre-recorded distress calls, predator calls or human voice through a horn speaker to deter granivorous and frugivorous birds from germinating, ripening or harvested crops. Targets include parrots, crows, sparrows, pigeons and seagulls.
Function
The unit relies on bio-acoustic deterrence: playback of conspecific distress calls or predator vocalisations triggers a flight response. Effectiveness is reported by commercial trials at up to 80% reduction in damage when paired with rotated audio tracks and varied placement to suppress habituation.
Design and specifications
Commercial sonic deterrents such as the Bird-X BirdXPeller PRO, Bird Gard and Portek Raptor use stored libraries of distress audio cycled in two-minute bursts every ten minutes. Low-cost rechargeable mic-and-speaker units used in Indian smallholdings allow the cultivator to record their own voice; output power is typically modest, suited to one to two acres per unit.
Operation
Devices are mounted on poles at canopy height. The duty cycle is kept intermittent to delay habituation. Operators usually combine audio deterrents with visual scarers (kites, reflectors) and shift unit position every few days. Audio scaring is included in bird-damage management modules at ICAR-NCIPM and TNAU.
Subsidy and adoption
Bird scarers fall under state horticulture-mission and integrated pest management equipment lists in several states; specific subsidy rates vary. Adoption is concentrated in maize at the milk stage, ripening guava, mango, grape, sunflower and sorghum.
