KNM 118 (Kunaram Sannalu)
KNM 118, marketed as Kunaram Sannalu, is a short-duration fine-grain rice variety released in 2016 by Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University from its Agricultural Research Station, Kunaram.
Key characteristics
- Marketing name: Kunaram Sannalu
- Released by: ARS Kunaram, PJTSAU, 2016
- Plant type: semi-dwarf, 100-106 cm; reduced lodging and shattering
- Yield potential: 7.0-8.0 t/ha
- Grain quality: head-rice recovery above 67%; low glycaemic index (~51) reported
Cultivation
The variety is grown in transplanted kharif and rabi paddy systems (Transplanting Paddy) across Telangana. Its semi-dwarf habit and shorter duration give it an agronomic edge over taller fine-grain types like Bpt 5204 in tracts where labour and water at harvest are scarce.
Pest and disease profile
KNM 118 is described as blast-tolerant (Paddy Blast Disease) with low brown planthopper incidence (Brown Planthopper Paddy) under field conditions in Telangana. The combination of blast tolerance and a high head-rice grain class is one of its principal selling points against older fine-grain releases.
Adoption and use
The Telangana state government has declared Kunaram Sannalu a fine variety of paddy, qualifying it for fine-rice procurement under state schemes. It is positioned alongside Knm 1638, Rnr 15048 and Jgl 24423 in the PJTSAU portfolio promoted as higher-yielding kharif alternatives to MTU 1010 (Mtu 1010) and BPT 5204.
