Rain gun irrigation
A rain gun is a high-discharge rotating impact sprinkler used to irrigate large blocks from a single riser. It is a scaled-up form of conventional Sprinkler Irrigation designed to cover several thousand square metres per setting and is widely adopted for field crops where rapid water application is required.
Principle
A single large-bore impact nozzle, mounted on a tall riser, rotates slowly under reaction from a spring-loaded arm. Water is delivered in a long arc that breaks into droplets over the wetted radius. Because one gun replaces dozens of small sprinklers, labour for set changes is reduced relative to a conventional sprinkler line.
Implementation
Farm-scale rain guns typically deliver 10,000-32,000 litres per hour (about 170-540 litres per minute), operate at 3-4 bar (30-40 metres of head) and throw a wetted radius of 30-50 metres. They are mounted on portable wheeled stands or on permanent risers in fixed-position systems. Rain guns are eligible as a sprinkler component for subsidy under the Per Drop More Crop scheme of PMKSY, sharing the same 55%/45% assistance structure described for Drip Irrigation.
Adoption context
Rain guns are commonly used on groundnut, sugarcane, maize, mulberry and leafy vegetables, where the heavy water curtain can also dislodge small thrips and caterpillars from the canopy. They suit holdings with adequate pumping capacity and irrigation water that is reasonably free of suspended sediment.
Limitations
The high droplet impact energy can damage delicate seedlings and compact fragile soil surfaces. Operating pressure is higher than for sprinklers or drip, raising energy demand. Distribution uniformity drops sharply in windy conditions, and the heavy spray pattern is unsuitable for crops vulnerable to foliar disease.
