LRG 41 redgram
LRG 41 is a medium-duration pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) variety bred at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Lam (Guntur), ANGRAU and recommended for kharif cultivation in Andhra Pradesh. It is one of the staple ANGRAU pigeonpea releases for the southern Telangana – Rayalaseema – coastal Andhra rainfed belt, valued for its determinate plant habit and brown bold seed.
Key features
- Breeder: ANGRAU, RARS Lam (Guntur)
- Duration: 160-180 days (medium)
- Yield: 1200-1600 kg/ha rainfed
- Plant type: semi-spreading, determinate
- Grain: bold brown seed, good dal recovery
- Resistance: moderate tolerance to sterility mosaic disease; tolerant to fusarium wilt in low-pressure fields
Cultivation zones
ANGRAU recommends LRG 41 as a kharif sole-crop or intercrop with castor / sorghum / pearl millet across rainfed black-cotton and red-loam belts of Andhra Pradesh. June-July sowing with 90 x 30 cm spacing is the standard. The variety responds to one protective irrigation at flowering/pod-fill if available. It is widely grown in Guntur, Prakasam, Kurnool and YSR Kadapa districts.
Pests and diseases
LRG 41 carries moderate tolerance to sterility mosaic disease but is not fully wilt-resistant — wilt-sick fields are better planted to ICPL 87119 (Asha) or Maruti. Pod borer (Helicoverpa armigera) and pod fly (Melanagromyza obtusa) need monitoring during the reproductive phase; ETL-based diamide or indoxacarb sprays are the standard recommendation in ANGRAU package-of-practices.
Usage and adoption
LRG 41 is one of the medium-duration ANGRAU pigeonpea varieties for which the university produces breeder seed alongside LRG 30, PRG 176, ICPL 85063 (Lakshmi), Asha, Maruti and TS-3R. Farmers prefer it where the cropping window favours a 160-180 day crop and where rainfed pigeonpea is sown as a kharif sole crop rather than as the long-duration partner in pigeonpea + groundnut intercrops.
