Cultivation
These premium hybrids are grown using the same summer-season package described in Watermelon Crop - raised beds with plastic mulch, drip irrigation and trellis-free open-field cultivation. Optimum production temperature is 20-35 degC. Growers must control irrigation and fertilizer near maturity to avoid cracking and spongy-flesh defects, which are particularly damaging for premium retail-channel fruit.
Pest and disease profile
The hybrids share the cucurbit pest and disease complex common to all watermelon - fruit fly, mosaic viruses, powdery and downy mildew, anthracnose and Fusarium wilt - and are managed with the standard cucurbit IPM and fungicide schedules.
Adoption and use
Yellow-flesh and novelty rind watermelons command a substantial price premium in Indian supermarket chains and quick-commerce platforms. Distribution is through Known-You's Bengaluru office and authorised dealers, and the varieties are also stocked by mainstream commercial seed retailers.
