JGL 24423 (Jagtial Rice-1)

JGL 24423, released as Jagtial Rice-1 by Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University, is a fine-grain medium-duration paddy bred at the Polasa Rice Research Station, Jagtial.

Key characteristics

  • Marketing name: Jagtial Rice-1
  • Breeding station: Polasa Rice Research Station, Jagtial (PJTSAU)
  • Grain type: long slender, non-lodging, low shattering
  • Resistance profile: high resistance to gall midge (Gall Midge Paddy), brown planthopper (Brown Planthopper Paddy) and blast (Paddy Blast Disease); cold-tolerant

Cultivation

The variety fits transplanted kharif and rabi systems on irrigated paddy across Telangana. Stiff straw and a non-lodging habit accommodate the high tiller and grain numbers reported in the release dossier. Cold tolerance extends the safe sowing window into early rabi or late kharif transplant dates in north Telangana.

Pest and disease profile

The release dossier and PJTSAU promotional material describe high resistance to gall midge, brown planthopper and rice blast, with low grain shattering during late-season storms. This profile differentiates JGL 24423 from the highly susceptible older lines it is positioned to replace.

Adoption and use

PJTSAU promotes JGL 24423 as a higher-yielding alternative to Mtu 1010 in Telangana kharif, and the Telangana government has recognised it as a fine paddy variety. It is part of the broader Jagtial portfolio that also includes Jgl 18047 and Jgl 28545.
