Taiwan Red Lady papaya

Red Lady (Taiwan 786) is a hermaphrodite F1 hybrid papaya developed by Known-You Seed of Taiwan and widely planted in India because of its self-pollinating habit, tolerance to papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) and high productivity per acre.

Key characteristics

  • Type: F1 hybrid, mostly hermaphrodite plants
  • Breeder: Known-You Seed Co., Taiwan
  • PRSV response: tolerant in the field (not immune)
  • Fruit: red, firm, aromatic pulp; average 1.5-2.5 kg per fruit
  • TSS: 13-14%
  • Spacing: 6-8 ft x 7-10 ft in commercial plantings; zigzag layouts also used
  • Productivity: up to around 50 t/acre over the full productive cycle, with 40-60 fruits per plant per season

Cultivation

Seedlings are raised in trays and transplanted at the polybag soil level on raised beds; deep transplanting predisposes plants to stem rot (Papaya Stem Rot Planting Depth). Drip irrigation, balanced fertigation and mulching extend the productive life of the orchard. Because most plants are hermaphrodite, separate pollinator rows are unnecessary, simplifying field layout compared with dioecious cultivars.

Pest and disease profile

The major disease constraint is papaya ringspot virus (Papaya Ringspot Virus Management), against which Red Lady offers field tolerance but not immunity; integrated vector management remains essential. Stem rot caused by Phytophthora, Fusarium and Pythium spp. (Papaya Stem Rot Planting Depth) is the principal soilborne problem. Mealybug, mites and papaya leaf curl virus also occur.

Adoption and use

Red Lady dominates commercial papaya plantings in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat. Fruits are sold mainly as fresh table fruit; smaller volumes are processed into juice, fruit salad and papain. The variety's combined tolerance to PRSV and self-pollinating habit are the main reasons for its widespread adoption over open-pollinated varieties.
