Solar Electric Fencing
Solar electric fencing is a perimeter security installation that uses a small solar photovoltaic (PV) module to charge a deep-cycle battery, which drives an energiser; the energiser delivers short, high-voltage pulses through one or more high-tensile wires to deter elephants, wild boar, nilgai, monkeys, stray cattle and human intruders. It is the dominant crop-protection technology in forest-fringe and conflict-prone districts.
Function
The energiser converts low-voltage DC battery power into short high-voltage pulses of 7,000-10,000 volts, repeated approximately every 1.0-1.2 seconds for around one millisecond per pulse. An animal touching the wire receives a sharp but non-lethal shock that conditions it to retreat from the boundary. The brief pulse is critical: a continuous high voltage would be lethal and is prohibited.
Design and specifications
A standard installation uses a 12 V / 40 Wp crystalline PV module certified under MNRE specifications, a sealed deep-cycle battery, an energiser sized to the perimeter length, an earthing rod set, and high-tensile galvanised wires on insulator posts. Multi-line installations with six to seven wires are used for elephant-rated fencing in forest-fringe villages. Capital costs are typically Rs 25,000-40,000 per acre for basic fencing and Rs 80,000-1,20,000 per acre for elephant fencing.
Operation
The system runs continuously through the day on solar charge and at night on stored battery power. Maintenance involves periodic insulator inspection, vegetation clearance under the wires to prevent grounding, and battery health checks. Fault alarms on modern energisers signal broken wires.
Subsidy and adoption
Many states offer 30-50% subsidy for solar fencing under crop-protection and human-wildlife-conflict mitigation programmes. NABARD model bankable schemes provide a financing template. Adoption is heaviest in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, West Bengal and the North-East.
