Turmeric (Curcuma longa)

Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) is the golden-rhizome spice that built India's GI for high-curcumin product. ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research, Kozhikode has released IISR Prathibha (1996; 39.12 t/ha, 6.52% curcumin, 225 days), IISR Pragati (short duration), IISR Alleppey Supreme (35.4 t/ha, 210 days) and IISR Kedaram.

Cultivation and adoption

The crop demands deep loamy soils, 30-40 t/ha FYM and 60:50:120 NPK with hydrated-lime amendment on laterites. Telangana (Nizamabad), AP, TN, Karnataka, Maharashtra, MP and Odisha lead production.
