Mini Tractor with Slim Tyres

A mini tractor is a sub-30 HP compact four-wheel machine sized for inter-row work in orchards, vineyards, sugarcane and cotton, where a standard 45-50 HP tractor is too wide or too heavy. Fitted with narrow tyres, it can pass between rows without damaging foliage or compacting the root zone.

Function

A mini tractor performs the same range of operations as a full-sized tractor - tillage with a Rotavator or Ridger Plough, spraying with a Tractor Mounted Sprayer, trailer haulage, and inter-cultivation - but at scaled-down width, weight, lift capacity and PTO output.

Design and specifications

Reference models include the Mahindra Jivo 225 DI (20 HP, 2WD or 4WD), the Jivo 245 DI 4WD (24 HP engine, 22 HP PTO, 1366 cc 2-cylinder engine, 8 forward + 4 reverse gearbox, 750 kg hydraulic lift), Sonalika's 20-32 HP mini range and the John Deere 3028EN/5050D. Mahindra explicitly markets the Jivo 4WD for orchard, vineyard, sugarcane and cotton inter-row operation, on the back of a narrow track width and a low seat height.

Operation

The operator selects a forward gear matched to the implement and the soil condition. The shorter wheelbase and narrower track allow turning within orchard rows; the slim tyres reduce both crop damage and root-zone compaction. Pairing with Narrow Orchard Wheels (high-clearance tall-and-thin wheel conversions) extends ground clearance for spraying over already-grown vegetable rows.

Subsidy and adoption

All commercial models are tested by CFMTTI Budni and the regional FMTTIs, and are SMAM-subsidy eligible. Mini tractors form a fast-growing segment in Indian horticulture clusters, custom-hiring fleets and small-farm purchases under 5 acres.
