Coragen
FMC Coragen is the brand name for the 18.5% SC formulation of chlorantraniliprole, the first commercial anthranilic diamide insecticide. It is one of the most extensively used insecticides in Indian paddy, cotton and vegetable production.
Composition / Active ingredient
- Active ingredient: Chlorantraniliprole
- Formulation: 18.5% SC (suspension concentrate)
- Chemical class: Anthranilic diamide
Mode of action
Coragen activates insect ryanodine receptors, causing unregulated release of calcium from sarcoplasmic reticulum into muscle cells, leading to feeding cessation, lethargy and paralysis. It is classified under IRAC Group 28. The molecule is IPM-compatible: it is highly selective for insect ryanodine receptors and has limited impact on most beneficial arthropods. Once absorbed by the leaf cuticle (within minutes), it is rain-fast even if precipitation falls within 2 hours of application.
Target use and dose
The standard recommended dose is 60 ml/acre in 200 L water for:
- Paddy: yellow stem borer, leaf folder (60 ml/acre at booting)
- Cotton: bollworm, armyworm, Helicoverpa
- Vegetables: fruit borer in tomato, brinjal, chilli, okra
- Groundnut: 60 ml/acre for caterpillar control at flowering, alongside alternatives such as Ampligo (80-100 ml/acre)
In sugarcane, the dose is raised to 160-200 ml/acre for top borer control. Pack sizes are typically 60 ml bottles priced ₹800-850.
Safety and regulatory status
Coragen is in the "Caution" green-band toxicity class. To preserve diamide efficacy against paddy stem borer and DBM, label limits Group 28 sprays to two per season, with rotation to unrelated MoAs such as Broflanilide Exponus, Emamectin Benzoate and Triflumezopyrim Pexalon in the intervening generations.
