WGL 962
WGL 962 is a fine-grain paddy variety released by the Warangal Regional Agricultural Research Station of Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU). It is promoted as a higher-yielding replacement for Bpt 5204 in Telangana paddy cultivation.
Key characteristics
- Breeding station: Warangal Regional Agricultural Research Station (PJTSAU)
- Duration: ~125 days seed-to-seed (some reports: 120 days)
- Grain type: fine, medium-fine class
- Positioning: fine-grain replacement for BPT 5204
- Resistance: blast tolerance documented in PJTSAU screening
Cultivation
The variety fits transplanted (Transplanting Paddy) kharif and rabi systems in Telangana and adjacent districts of Andhra Pradesh, with the Warangal AICRIP centre running minikit trials and field days. Its ~125-day duration places it in the same fine-grain replacement category as Rnr 15048, Knm 118 Kunaram Sannalu and Knm 1638.
Pest and disease profile
WGL 962 is reported as lodging- and shattering-tolerant and as blast-tolerant (Paddy Blast Disease). Like other Warangal-bred lines, the variety has been included in phenotypic and genotypic screening against rice gall midge (Gall Midge Paddy), a key pest in north Telangana paddy belts.
Adoption and use
The variety circulates through PJTSAU's Warangal centre and partner KVKs as one of several fine-grain options promoted alongside Mtu 1282, Knm 118 Kunaram Sannalu and Jgl 24423 in the Telangana fine-rice supply pipeline.
