MTU 1271

MTU 1271 is a non-lodging, semi-dwarf rice variety from the Maruteru Rice Research Station (ANGRAU), Andhra Pradesh. It is recommended for the Rayalaseema and north-coastal zones of Andhra Pradesh and is part of the recent generation of Maruteru releases positioned around the 140-day medium-fine grain class.

Key characteristics

  • Breeding station: Maruteru Rice Research Station (ANGRAU)
  • Duration: ~140 days
  • Plant habit: semi-dwarf, non-lodging
  • Recommended zones: Rayalaseema (Kadapa, Kurnool, Chittoor, Tirupati, Nandyal) and north-coastal AP (Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli, Vizianagaram)

Cultivation

MTU 1271 fits transplanted (Transplanting Paddy) kharif and rabi systems in its recommended zones. Standard 140-day medium-fine agronomy applies, with panicle-initiation and boot-stage nutrition critical to yield realisation (Paddy Panicle Stage Fertilization, Paddy Panicle Stage Management). The non-lodging semi-dwarf architecture supports higher tiller and grain numbers than tall fine-grain types of the same duration.

Adoption and use

The variety is documented in the Maruteru AICRIP centre brief and in ANGRAU's recent variety release communications as a productive option for the AP zones noted above. Its grain grades at Indira Kranthi Patham procurement centres, supporting state procurement uptake.
