Karpura / Sugandham banana
Karpooravalli, also known as Karpura Vazhai, Sugandham, Kostha Bontha and Boodi Bale, is a Pisang Awak (ABB genome group) dessert banana popular in Tamil Nadu and other parts of south India. The cultivar is named for the characteristic camphor-like aroma of the ripe fruit, which distinguishes it from Cavendish-type bananas.
Key characteristics
- Genome group: Pisang Awak (ABB)
- Plant: medium-sized
- Fruit: medium-sized, thick-skinned, soft sweet pulp with a natural camphor aroma when ripe
- Duration: 10-12 months to bearing
- Adaptation: warm humid tropics; tolerant of moderate moisture stress relative to Cavendish
Cultivation
The variety is propagated mainly through suckers, with planting carried out across south Indian states in March-May or during the post-monsoon window. It is grown at wider spacing than dwarf Cavendish types, around 7 x 7 ft, and is commonly raised under drip irrigation with farmyard manure as the base nutrition. Ratoon crops are typically retained for two to three cycles. As with other banana cultivars, the heavy bunches require staking at bunch emergence (Banana Staking Bamboo).
Pest and disease profile
Karpooravalli, as an ABB-genome banana, is generally more tolerant of Fusarium wilt and abiotic stress than AAA Cavendish types but is susceptible to bunchy top virus and to sigatoka leaf spots under wet conditions. Indexed tissue-cultured planting material and removal of infected mats are the principal sanitation measures.
Adoption and use
Karpooravalli is grown primarily for local fresh-fruit markets and for traditional offerings; its aromatic ripe pulp is also used in steamed and fried preparations. It complements rather than competes with Cavendish G9 (Banana G9 Tissue Culture) plantings, since the two varieties target different consumer segments.
