Madanapalle tomato main yard

The Madanapalle main yard, in Annamayya district of Andhra Pradesh, is one of the three largest tomato auction hubs in India alongside Kolar (Karnataka) and Pimpalgaon (Maharashtra). Daily peak-season arrivals of 800-1,200 tonnes make it the price-setting yard for the South Indian tomato market. It is distinct from the nearby Mulakalacheruvu sub-yard (Mulakalacheruvu Tomato Market), which operates as a satellite point in the same cluster.

Overview

The main yard is a notified market under the Andhra Pradesh State Agricultural Marketing Board and operates as a regulated APMC (Apmc Mandi) facility. Tomatoes arrive from cultivators across the Madanapalle, Punganur, Rompicherla, Kuppam and B Kothakota mandals, and from adjoining tracts of Chittoor and Karnataka.

Implementation

  • Cultivators arrive at the yard between late evening and early morning; the auction is conducted by licensed commission agents through open-call bidding.
  • Buyers include intra-state wholesalers, North Indian commission agents based in Azadpur (Delhi) and Vashi (Mumbai), and exporters supplying processors and tomato puree units.
  • Pre-cooling and grading at pack-houses (Grading And Sorting Fresh Produce) are increasingly common for export-destined lots.
  • Volumes and prices recorded at the yard feed Agmarknet and AP One; they are the principal anchor for downstream prices in terminal markets.

Adoption context

The yard handles three distinct production windows: the kharif crop (October-December), the rabi crop (March-May) and the summer crop (June-August) from polyhouses and hill-irrigation fields. The combined output of the Madanapalle cluster supplies tomato to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad, with road logistics via NH-40 and NH-44. The tomato price cycle (Tomato Price Cycle) at Madanapalle is the most-watched in Indian vegetable markets because of its sheer volume and price influence.

Limitations

Peak-season gluts repeatedly crash prices below cost of cultivation, with growers occasionally dumping unsold lots on roadsides. Cold-chain capacity at the yard remains inadequate; most produce moves under ambient temperature in tarpaulin-covered trucks. Inter-state logistics (Inter State Produce Logistics) costs frequently exceed farm-gate prices in glut weeks.
