Tamarind aggregation and wholesale trade
Tamarind is a notified spice under the Spices Board of India and India is the world's largest producer of the commodity. Trade volume is concentrated in southern markets, with Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Karnataka belts serving as the principal price-setting yards for raw and processed tamarind.
Overview
Tamarind pods are harvested in late winter, sun-dried, deseeded and graded by colour and pulp content. The aggregation pipeline runs from village-level kalla (smallholder) traders to district-yard commission agents (see Commission Agent Arthiya) and onward to processors and inter-state wholesalers. Processed tamarind takes several commercial forms — whole pulp, deseeded pulp, paste and concentrate — for retail and food-industry consumption.
Eligibility
Trade in tamarind inside notified market areas is conducted by APMC-licensed commission agents and traders. The Spices Board, under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, regulates exports and runs quality-improvement and post-harvest infrastructure schemes for spices.
Benefit and structure
- Regulator: Spices Board of India, Ministry of Commerce & Industry
- Principal trade yards: APMCs of Kalyandurg, Rayadurg and Hindupur in Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh
- Price tracking: daily arrivals and modal price recorded on Agmarknet under the Andhra Pradesh State Agricultural Marketing Board
These yards are key reference points for price discovery in the southern tamarind belt, with consignments flowing on to processors in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai and exporters serving Gulf and Southeast Asian markets.
Implementation
State Agricultural Marketing Boards regulate yard-level operations through licensed commission agents and traders, while the Spices Board supports cleaning, grading and warehousing infrastructure under its development schemes. Electronic trading on Enam Electronic National Agriculture Market is incrementally extending to spices, including tamarind, in onboarded mandis.
