Rasthali banana — silk-group premium dessert
Rasthali is a premium AAB-genome dessert banana belonging to the Silk subgroup. The cultivar is one of the most highly priced bananas in India, valued for its thin, golden skin and dense, aromatic, sweet-tart pulp. Synonyms include "Malbhog" in Bihar and Assam, "Sugandhi" in parts of Andhra Pradesh and "Silk" in international classification. Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh together account for the majority of organised Rasthali plantings, with smaller pockets in Karnataka, Kerala, Bihar and Assam. ICAR-NRCB Trichy and TNAU maintain agronomic packages, while the Sirumalai Hills Rasthali of Tamil Nadu holds a Geographical Indication tag.
Key characteristics
- Genome group: AAB, Silk subgroup
- Plant height: 10-12 ft, slender pseudostem
- Crop cycle: 14-16 months from planting to harvest (longer than Cavendish)
- Bunch weight: 12-18 kg with 6-9 hands of medium fingers
- Finger: 100-130 g, thin golden-yellow skin, dense aromatic pulp with sweet-acidic flavour
- TSS: 22-25 °Brix at full ripeness
- Yield: 20-25 t/ha (lower than Cavendish, compensated by premium pricing)
- Price premium: 50-100% higher per kg than Cavendish in urban retail
Cultivation
Rasthali is planted at 6 ft x 7 ft or 7 ft x 7 ft spacing. Sucker-based propagation is traditional; tissue-cultured planting material is increasingly preferred because of the cultivar's high susceptibility to Fusarium wilt and bunchy top virus. Drip-fertigation with balanced NPK and elevated potassium during finger filling is standard. Because of the slender pseudostem and heavy individual fingers, propping with bamboo or casuarina poles at bunch emergence is essential. Harvesting is staggered hand by hand to maintain quality and avoid splitting; the ripening process is managed carefully because the variety is prone to fruit cracking.
Pest and disease profile
Rasthali is highly susceptible to Fusarium wilt Race 1 (Banana Fusarium Wilt Foc Tr4), and this single factor has constrained its expansion in many traditional belts. The cultivar is also susceptible to Sigatoka leaf spots (Banana Sigatoka Yellow Mycosphaerella) and banana bunchy top virus (Banana Bunchy Top Virus). Corm weevil (Banana Corm Weevil Cosmopolites) and nematodes are recurrent below-ground constraints. Tissue-cultured planting material, soil application of Trichoderma and rotation away from wilt-infested fields are the principal management levers.
Adoption and use
Rasthali supplies the premium dessert and gift segment in urban India and is widely used at weddings, festivals and religious ceremonies. The variety is the principal raw material for traditional ripe-banana preparations in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, including "rasthali payasam" and dried-banana snacks. The Sirumalai Hills GI-tagged Rasthali commands a further price premium and is sold under origin-of-source branding.
