Marwari sheep (Rajasthan)
Marwari is the most numerous and widely distributed sheep breed of western Rajasthan, registered with the ICAR National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR). It is a hardy, drought-tolerant carpet-wool and mutton dual-purpose breed of the Marwar region, and the genetic backbone of pastoralist sheep economies across Jodhpur, Pali, Barmer and Jalore districts.
Origin and distribution
The breeding tract centres on Jodhpur, Pali, Nagaur, Barmer and Jalore districts of Rajasthan, extending into adjoining Sirohi, Sikar, Ajmer and the Banaskantha-Kachchh fringe of Gujarat. The tract is arid, with annual rainfall of 200-400 mm and sparse natural grazing on sewan, dhaman and khejri. Most flocks belong to Raika/Rebari and Sindhi-Sipahi pastoralist communities, who practise long-range seasonal migration into Malwa, Haryana and Punjab during the dry months.
Morphology
Marwari sheep are medium-sized with a compact, well-built body. The face is black and free of wool, sharply contrasting with the white body fleece — the diagnostic feature of the breed. Ears are very small, tubular and almost rudimentary. Both sexes are typically polled. The tail is short and thin. Adult body weight averages 32-38 kg in rams and 25-30 kg in ewes.
Performance
The fleece is coarse, hairy and white, suited mainly for hand-spun carpet yarn and traditional textiles rather than apparel wool. Annual greasy fleece yield is around 0.9-1.5 kg, taken in two or three shearings per year. Fibre diameter averages 35-45 microns. Lambing is single, with an annual lambing interval and age at first lambing of 18-22 months. Mutton dressing percentage is 45-50 percent in well-finished animals. Marwari ram lambs are intensively fattened for the festival ram market (Ram Fattening Bakrid).
Management
Flocks are managed under transhumant migratory grazing (Migratory Sheep Grazing) covering hundreds of kilometres along established Raika routes. Stationary peri-urban units rely on harvested bajra and moong fields, khejri lopping and cultivated cluster bean fodder. PPR (Ppr Vaccination Detailed) and structured small-ruminant vaccination (Small Ruminant Vaccination Schedule) anchor the herd-health calendar; sheep pox and enterotoxaemia are recurring losses in unvaccinated flocks. Marwari is the dam-line in the synthesis of Avikalin and other CSWRI carpet-wool improvement strains.
