Banana Fusarium wilt — Panama disease and Tropical Race 4

Banana Fusarium wilt, historically known as Panama disease, is a soilborne vascular wilt caused by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc). Tropical Race 4 (TR4, also designated VCG 01213) is the most virulent strain and the principal global threat to Cavendish (Banana Grand Naine G9 Jain Tc, Banana G9 Tissue Culture) production. TR4 was officially confirmed in India in Bihar in 2017-2018 and has since been reported from limited pockets across the country; ICAR-NRCB Trichy is the national reference centre for surveillance and management.

Identification and symptoms

External symptoms begin with yellowing of older leaves at the margins, progressing inward; leaves collapse at the petiole and hang like a "skirt" around the pseudostem. Longitudinal splitting at the base of the pseudostem is characteristic. Cutting a diseased pseudostem reveals reddish-brown to black vascular discolouration in concentric rings; the rhizome shows similar dark vascular streaks.

Host crops and life cycle

Foc Race 1 historically caused the destruction of Gros Michel plantations worldwide and continues to affect Indian cultivars such as Rasthali (Banana Rasthali Silk India), Ney Poovan (Banana Ney Poovan Elaichi), Virupakshi and Monthan (Banana Monthan Cooking Plantain). Foc TR4 attacks Cavendish (Grand Naine, G9, Robusta) in addition to all Race 1 hosts. The fungus survives in soil as chlamydospores for 20-30 years, infects roots through wounds, colonises the xylem and is spread by infected suckers, contaminated soil, water and farm machinery.

Damage and economic impact

Once established, TR4 cannot be eradicated from a field, and Cavendish plantings become unviable for the foreseeable future. Yield losses in affected blocks approach 100% within two to three cycles. The pathogen's persistence and pan-cultivar virulence make it the single most serious biotic constraint to the global banana industry.

Management

There is no curative chemical treatment for Foc TR4; management is preventive and biosecurity-led:

  • Exclusion: planting only indexed tissue-culture material; restricting movement of soil, suckers and used equipment from infested farms.
  • Resistant cultivars: deployment of Foc-tolerant lines such as ICAR-NRCB selections and somaclonal variants under evaluation; traditional resistance in cultivars like Pisang Jari Buaya.
  • Cultural: avoiding waterlogging; raised beds; crop rotation with rice or sugarcane in mildly affected soils; long fallows.
  • Biological: soil application of Trichoderma asperellum and Pseudomonas fluorescens as supportive measures.
  • Containment: fencing infested blocks, foot dips with quaternary ammonium disinfectants, destruction of infected mats by deep burial or burning.
