HD 3226 (Pusa Yashasvi) wheat

HD 3226, named Pusa Yashasvi, is a bread wheat variety bred at ICAR-IARI Pusa, New Delhi and notified in 2019. It combines high yield potential with strong, durable rust resistance and excellent breadmaking quality — protein content around 12.8 percent — making it attractive to both farmers and millers in NWPZ.

Cultivation

HD 3226 is timely-sown irrigated. Sowing window 25 October to 25 November. Seed rate 100 kg/ha at 22.5 cm row spacing. NPK 150:60:40 kg/ha with a 50:25:25 split nitrogen schedule. Five to six irrigations are required at CRI, tillering, jointing, flowering, milking and dough stages. The variety performs particularly well on medium to heavy loam soils with assured tube-well irrigation.

Pests and diseases

HD 3226 was bred with multi-gene rust resistance and has held up well against the yellow rust races that broke HD 2967 in parts of Punjab and Haryana. Brown rust resistance is similarly strong. Karnal bunt response is moderate — keep seed testing routine. Aphids and termites are managed with imidacloprid 17.8 SL seed treatment.

Quality and adoption

HD 3226 stands out for grain quality — bread baking volume and chapati elasticity scores are among the highest in IARI's current portfolio. Roller-flour mills in Punjab and Haryana pay a small premium for HD 3226 wheat. The variety has spread quickly across Punjab, Haryana and Western UP since 2019. IARI Pusa, PAU Ludhiana, CCS HAU Hisar and GBPUAT Pantnagar produce breeder seed annually.
