RNR 15048 (Telangana Sona)

RNR 15048, marketed as Telangana Sona, is a short-duration, super-fine-grain rice variety bred at the Rice Research Centre, ARI Rajendranagar, of Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU). It was notified for Telangana through Indian Gazette notification S.O. 2238(E) dated 29 June 2016.

Key characteristics

  • Marketing name: Telangana Sona
  • Breeding institute: Rice Research Centre, ARI Rajendranagar (PJTSAU)
  • Pedigree: MTU 1010 x JGL 3855
  • Duration: ~125 days
  • Yield potential: 6.5-7.0 t/ha
  • Grain: super-fine, semi-tall plant habit, head-rice recovery over 67%
  • Glycaemic index: low (~51), one of the few Indian fine-grain rices marketed on this trait
  • Resistance: blast and neck-blast resistance; field reports note BPH tolerance

Cultivation

Telangana Sona is grown predominantly in transplanted (Transplanting Paddy) kharif and rabi systems across Telangana. Tillering is moderate, so planting density is kept high - 3-4 seedlings per hill at close spacing - to compensate. The short duration and high head-rice recovery have made it the de-facto fine-grain replacement for Bpt 5204 in Telangana's procurement-driven marketing system. In rabi, duration runs about 120 days from a December nursery and 130-140 days from a November nursery.

Pest and disease profile

The variety is resistant to leaf and neck blast (Paddy Blast Disease, Rice Blast) and shows field tolerance to brown planthopper. It is, however, more prone to yellow stem borer (Yellow Stem Borer Paddy, Stem Borer Paddy) than the variety it replaced, so boot-stage stem-borer management is part of standard agronomy.

Adoption and use

Telangana Sona is widely adopted across Telangana and adjacent districts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Its low glycaemic index marketing and high head-rice grade have driven branded retail sales beyond traditional rice channels. It is positioned alongside Drr Dhan 75, Knm 118 Kunaram Sannalu and Knm 1638 in the PJTSAU portfolio of fine-grain replacements for BPT 5204.
