Egg Incubator (Small-Scale)
A small-scale egg incubator is an insulated chamber that artificially maintains the temperature, humidity and egg-turning conditions needed to hatch poultry eggs without a brooding hen. Indian models are used for native chicken, duck, turkey, kadaknath, quail and pigeon breeding in backyard and farm-level operations.
Function
A heating element regulated by a thermostat holds chamber air at approximately 37.5 degrees Celsius dry bulb. A humidity tray (with about one litre of water for small units) maintains relative humidity near 60%. An automatic turning tray rotates the eggs every one to four hours, mimicking the natural egg-turning behaviour of brooding hens.
Design and specifications
Capacity ranges from 20 to roughly 1,000 eggs in the small-scale segment. Indian thermocol-and-plywood and metal-body models with locally manufactured controllers (such as the Kerala-made RD-150) are common. Hatch rates of 50-80% are typical, the upper end requiring high-quality eggs, controlled incoming-egg cold-storage, and consistent thermostat operation.
Operation
Eggs are candled to remove infertile ones before setting and again at day 7-10. Temperature, humidity and turning continue through the incubation period (about 21 days for chicken, 28 for duck and turkey, 18 for quail). At lockdown, turning stops and humidity is raised. After hatching, chicks are moved to a brooder.
Subsidy and adoption
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying supports backyard poultry through the National Livestock Mission, which includes incubators in its equipment-subsidy list. ICAR-CARI (Central Avian Research Institute) Izatnagar is the apex national lab for poultry hatchery management and protocols.
