HD 3086 (Pusa Gautami) wheat

HD 3086, named Pusa Gautami, is a bread wheat variety bred at ICAR-IARI Pusa, New Delhi and released in 2014 for the North-Western Plains Zone. It was developed as a successor and partial replacement for HD 2967 with stronger resistance to current rust races and similar timely-sown irrigated adaptation.

Cultivation

HD 3086 is timely-sown irrigated. Sowing window 25 October to 25 November. Seed rate 100 kg/ha at 22.5 cm row spacing. NPK 150:60:40 kg/ha split as basal 50 percent and top-dressed 25 percent each at CRI and tillering. Five to six irrigations are required at CRI, tillering, jointing, flowering, milking and dough stages. The variety performs well even under one missed late irrigation, giving farmers some buffer against canal-water uncertainty.

Pests and diseases

HD 3086 carries seedling and adult-plant resistance against yellow rust (Yr races prevalent in north India at release) and brown rust. Karnal bunt response is moderate — keep seed testing routine before purchase. Aphids and termites are routine; manage with imidacloprid 17.8 SL seed treatment and timely surveillance.

Adoption

HD 3086 became the dominant successor to HD 2967 in NWPZ from 2016-2017 onwards. PAU Ludhiana, CCS HAU Hisar, GBPUAT Pantnagar and IARI itself produced breeder seed each season. The variety is now being progressively replaced in turn by DBW 222 and DBW 303 as those newer IIWBR releases became available, but HD 3086 remains widely sown across Punjab, Haryana and Western UP.
