Farm pond shed / cover

Covering an open Farm Pond with a floating or suspended material reduces evaporation loss, controls algal growth and limits debris ingress. Cover options range from floating thermocol sheets and shade balls to suspended shade-net roofs, each trading off cost, durability and coverage.

Principle

Direct solar radiation and surface wind drive evaporation from open water. A cover physically isolates the water surface from radiation and wind, lowers near-surface humidity gradients and damps wind-driven turbulence. Shading also reduces water-temperature swings and slows algal photosynthesis, cutting biofilm formation.

Implementation

Three cover types are documented in Indian field studies. Floating thermocol sheets cover the surface directly and have been shown to prevent about 32% of evaporation. Suspended 50% shade-net covers, mounted on cables above the pond, reduce evaporation by about 20%. Shade balls floated on the surface have achieved 43-45% reduction at a reservoir at Namakkal, Tamil Nadu. The choice depends on pond size, prevailing wind and the need to access the water surface for pumping. The technique aligns with ICAR-CAZRI and ICAR-CRIDA work on evaporation-control measures for in-situ moisture conservation in dryland farming.

Adoption context

Covers suit small irrigation ponds used as buffer storage for Drip Irrigation supply, where every litre saved extends the irrigation window through summer. Secondary benefits include reduced debris fall-in, lower algal cleaning effort and slightly cooler delivery water for sensitive crops.

Limitations

Initial cost and the durability of floating materials in monsoon storms limit large-scale adoption. Thermocol sheets can fragment over time; shade balls require containment if the pond has an open spillway. Covers must be removed or held back during cleaning and silt removal, adding maintenance steps.
