Vermiwash
Vermiwash is a brown, near-odourless liquid leachate collected by percolating water slowly through an active vermicomposting bed colonised by Eisenia fetida. The leachate is rich in soluble nutrients, plant-growth hormones, enzymes and beneficial microbes, and is used as a foliar spray and soil drench in organic and integrated farming systems.
Composition
- Origin: leachate from active vermicompost bed of cow dung and pre-decomposed crop residue
- Key actives: water-soluble N, P and K in low concentrations, plant-growth hormones (auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins), enzymes (proteases, ureases), vitamins and beneficial microbes
- Appearance: light brown to amber clear liquid, near-odourless when fresh
Vermiwash is collected through a perforated pipe at the base of a raised vermibed; water sprayed on top percolates down and is captured below.
Mode of action
Vermiwash combines a low-density NPK supply with a high-density microbial culture and naturally occurring phytohormones. Foliar application delivers immediately available nutrients to leaves, while inoculating the leaf surface with beneficial microbes. Soil drench applications inoculate the rhizosphere with the same microbial community and provide soluble organic compounds that stimulate root activity. The category is functionally similar to Jeevamrutham Drava and Panchagavya but is derived from active vermicomposting rather than direct cow-product fermentation.
Target use and dose
- Foliar spray: approximately 10% dilution in water (100 ml per litre), applied to crops at vegetative and reproductive stages.
- Soil drench: at the same dilution through irrigation water.
- Seed treatment: dilute solution to coat seed before sowing.
Used widely in TNAU and ICAR organic-farming package-of-practices for vegetables, pulses, oilseeds and field crops. It complements Vermicompost in the same farming system.
Safety and regulatory status
Accepted within FCO biostimulant and organic-input frameworks. Non-toxic and approved for use in certified-organic production. Shelf life is limited; fresh batches are typically used within a week or two of collection.
