Himayat (Imam Pasand) mango

Imam Pasand, also known as Himayuddin, Himayat and Humayun Pasand, is a late-season premium mango cultivar grown in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It is named for its association with Mughal-era royal courts and is regarded as a connoisseur cultivar in south India.

Key characteristics

  • Alternate names: Himayuddin, Himayat, Humayun Pasand
  • Growing states: Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana
  • Fruit weight: 300-500 g; occasional fruits up to 800 g
  • Fruit length: 25-33 cm; large oval-oblong shape
  • Skin: thin, marked by characteristic white lenticels
  • Flesh: pale yellow, fibreless, melting; sweet-tangy with citrus and coconut notes
  • Season: late, available from late April to early July

Cultivation

Himayat is propagated by softwood and veneer grafting on local mango rootstock. Conventional spacing of 8-10 m is common, with high-density variants (Mango Orchard Establishment Hdp) tested for trial blocks. Canopy training and pruning (Mango Canopy Training Pruning) are used to keep the large fruit-bearing branches manageable, and flowering management (Mango Flowering Management) is increasingly applied to reduce alternate bearing.

Pest and disease profile

The variety is susceptible to mango hopper, mealybug, fruit fly (Fruit Fly Orchard Pest), powdery mildew and anthracnose. Because of the long fruit-development period, fruit fly control over the late-season window is particularly important.

Adoption and use

Himayat fetches premium prices in the Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru markets and is shipped overnight to other metros and to Gulf destinations during the late season. It is mainly consumed fresh; small volumes are also processed into pulp and slices. It complements early-to-mid season cultivars such as Banganapalli (Mango Banganapalli Beneshan), Alphonso (Mango Alphonso), Kesar (Mango Kesar), Dasheri (Mango Dasheri) and the pulp-grade Totapuri (Mango Totapuri).
