Mallepoolu / Gundumalli (Jasminum sambac)

Mallepoolu or Gundumalli (Jasminum sambac) is the highest-priced loose-flower jasmine in south India, valued for its strong fragrance and use in garlands, hair-decoration and attar industry.

Cultivation and adoption

Cultivars include Gundumalli, Ramban, Madanban and Double Mogra. IIHR Bengaluru and TNAU coordinate research on J. sambac and J. grandiflorum; IIHR has released a J. grandiflorum variety with ~10 t/ha flower yield. Crops require well-drained sandy loam, regular pruning in November-December, and fertigation for sustained flowering from March-October.
