Roto Puddler
A roto puddler is a tractor-PTO driven rotary implement that simultaneously puddles and levels a flooded paddy field, replacing the conventional rotavator-plus-cultivator pass before paddy transplanting. It produces the structureless, low-permeability mud layer that paddy cultivation depends on for water retention and weed suppression.
Function
A horizontal rotor carrying helically arranged C- or J-type blades works through a 5-10 cm layer of standing water, mixing the topsoil with the water to form a smooth, structureless puddle. A trailing levelling board behind the rotor smooths the surface for Paddy Transplanter or Drum Seeder Paddy use.
Design and specifications
C-type blades are helically arranged on the rotor to reduce draught and fuel use; J-type blades cut through sticky, waterlogged soil without clogging. Drive is via the tractor PTO, transmitted through a side chain and a single-speed gearbox to the rotor. A depth-control spring and a trailing-board levelling adjuster are standard. Implement width is typically 5-7 feet to match 35-50+ HP Indian tractors.
Operation
The field is first flooded to 5-10 cm of standing water after rough land preparation. The roto puddler is then drawn across the field, often with Cage Wheels Tractor fitted on the tractor for traction. One or two passes produce a puddled layer that reduces percolation, suppresses weeds and aids seedling establishment.
Subsidy and adoption
The roto puddler is on the SMAM subsidy list under tillage implements. Adoption is concentrated in transplanted-rice systems across Punjab, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Odisha.
