Dry direct-seeded rice (meta / veda vari)
Dry direct-seeded rice (Dry-DSR), called meta or veda vari in Telugu, is a paddy establishment method in which dry, ungerminated seed is sown into a dry, unpuddled field with a seed drill or broadcaster. The first irrigation is given after seedling emergence, removing the nursery, transplanting and puddling steps entirely.
Principle
By skipping puddling, the system preserves soil structure, avoids the high water requirement of wet-bed establishment, and allows mechanised drilling similar to other cereals. Crop emergence depends on either pre-sowing irrigation or pre-monsoon showers, and stand uniformity is sensitive to seed depth and seedbed tilth.
Implementation
A well-tilled, levelled field is sown with a tractor-drawn seed drill at standard plant population. Pre-emergence herbicides are applied within 0-3 days of sowing, and post-emergence herbicides at the 2-3 leaf stage to manage Echinochloa spp. and weedy rice (Paddy Weed Management). The first irrigation follows seedling emergence, then continues on schedules adjusted for soil texture. PJTSAU has published a 'Dry-Converted-Wet DSR' bulletin describing how the system can be flooded later to convert into a conventional wet-rice canopy.
Adoption context
ICAR-IIRR and ICAR-NRRI document Dry-DSR as a major water- and labour-saving alternative to puddled transplanting, with roughly 40% irrigation water savings, 20-30% lower cost of cultivation and a season 10-15 days shorter than transplanted rice (Transplanting Paddy). It is being promoted in Telangana and other groundwater-stressed paddy belts where labour is increasingly scarce.
Limitations
Stand establishment is highly sensitive to soil moisture at sowing, and dry sowing followed by heavy rain can crust the surface and reduce emergence. Weed pressure is consistently higher than in transplanted rice, and weedy rice is a serious medium-term risk because volunteer rice cannot be distinguished from the crop until flowering. Iron and zinc deficiencies appear more often on aerobic Dry-DSR than under flooded paddy.
