Konkan Meladonia jamun

Konkan Bahadoli is the standard commercial jamun cultivar from the Konkan region of Maharashtra; "Meladonia" appears to be a vernacular variant of the same selection. The variety was developed and released by Dr Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth (DBSKKV), Dapoli, and is the principal recommended jamun for the Konkan belt.

Key characteristics

  • Scientific name: Syzygium cumini
  • Release institute: DBSKKV Dapoli
  • Fruit weight: 25-28 g, considerably larger than wild seedling jamun
  • Pulp recovery: approximately 83%, with comparatively small seeds
  • GI status: registered as Bahadoli Jamun on 30 March 2024

Cultivation

Plants are propagated by softwood grafting on jamun seedling rootstock and brought into bearing in four to five years. Spacings used in commercial plantings range from 24 x 24 ft to 30 x 30 ft to give canopies enough sunlight for high-quality fruit development. Top pruning in January keeps canopies to harvestable height. Routine spray schedules typically include three to four foliar applications timed to flowering, fruit-set and fruit-fly suppression. Trees reach commercial peak yields in years 8 to 15, with a productive lifespan of around 20 to 25 years and mature trees bearing 100 kg or more.

Pest and disease profile

Fruit fly is the principal pest affecting marketable fruit and is managed through sanitation and methyl-eugenol traps. Anthracnose and leaf-spot occur in humid spells but rarely cause major economic damage.

Adoption and use

Bahadoli (Meladonia) is grown for fresh-fruit markets and for processing into juice, syrup and value-added beverages. Its high pulp recovery makes it especially attractive for the juice industry, including the CFTRI-aligned no-additive bottling pathway (Jamun Juice Processing). The 2024 GI tag, awarded to the Konkan growers' cluster, formalises the cultivar's geographical identity.
