DBW 303 (Karan Vaishnavi) wheat

DBW 303, released as Karan Vaishnavi in 2021, is the highest-yielding bread wheat variety in the IIWBR Karnal portfolio for early-sown irrigated conditions in NWPZ. It set a record yield potential of 97.4 q/ha in coordinated trials, placing it ahead of HD 3086 and DBW 222 in the same niche.

Cultivation

DBW 303 is bred specifically for early sowing — it needs the full 145-156 day cycle and benefits from cooler temperatures during grain-fill. Seed rate is 100 kg/ha at 18-22.5 cm row spacing. NPK 150:60:40 kg/ha with a split nitrogen schedule. Five to six irrigations are needed (CRI, tillering, jointing, booting, flowering, milking, dough). The variety responds strongly to higher fertility — farmers in Karnal, Kaithal and Hisar have reported 80 q/ha plus on assured-irrigation tube-well fields.

Pests and diseases

DBW 303 has a strong resistance package for the yellow and brown rust races currently dominant in NWPZ. Karnal bunt resistance is moderate — avoid late-evening pre-monsoon irrigation at flowering to reduce inoculum chances. Aphids and termites are managed conventionally with imidacloprid seed treatment.

Adoption

DBW 303 is the IIWBR flagship for early-sown niche from 2022 onwards. ICAR-IIWBR Karnal, Punjab Agricultural University Ludhiana, CCS HAU Hisar are multiplying breeder seed. The variety has been quickly adopted by progressive farmers in Karnal, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Patiala and Ludhiana, though seed availability lags demand.
