Karimunda black pepper (traditional Malabar cultivar)
Karimunda is the most widely cultivated traditional black pepper (Piper nigrum) landrace in Kerala, accounting for an estimated 70% of the area in the Malabar pepper belt. It is a farmer-selected open-pollinated cultivar, not a formally released variety, and is the benchmark genotype against which most ICAR-IISR hybrids are evaluated.
Key characteristics
- Type: open-pollinated traditional landrace
- Region: Idukki, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod (Kerala); Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada (Karnataka)
- Spike length: 8-12 cm with closely-set berries
- Setting %: high (70-80%) under shaded conditions
- Dry recovery: about 33-35% (dry-to-green ratio ~1:3)
- Piperine: ~3.5-4.5%
- Oleoresin: ~10%
- Drying ratio: 3 kg green = 1 kg dry black pepper
- Field tolerance: moderately tolerant to drought and shade; susceptible to Phytophthora capsici foot rot
Cultivation
Karimunda is propagated by rooted runner-shoot cuttings (2-3 node) from selected vines. Standards used are Erythrina indica, Garuga pinnata, silver oak (Grevillea robusta) or live areca/coconut palms. Recommended spacing is 3 × 3 m on flat ground and 2 × 2 m on slopes. The first commercial harvest comes in the third year, full bearing from the seventh. Manuring follows the ICAR-IISR schedule: 100:40:140 g NPK/vine/year split in May and September with 10 kg FYM. Mulching with green leaf at the base before the monsoon is standard.
Pest and disease profile
The variety is highly susceptible to [[black-pepper-foot-rot-phytophthora-capsici|Phytophthora foot rot]] and to pollu beetle (Black Pepper Pollu Beetle Longitarsus). It also suffers from slow decline caused by Radopholus similis nematode and Fusarium species, particularly on poorly drained slopes.
Adoption and use
Despite the availability of higher-yielding hybrids such as Panniyur and IISR series, Karimunda remains preferred by traders for its bold, uniformly round berries, high bulk density and consistent quality grading as MG-1. Garbled Karimunda is the reference berry for Malabar Garbled (MG) export specification under the Spices Board India.
