Automatic drip irrigation (zone controllers)
Automatic drip irrigation combines a conventional Drip Irrigation network with electronic timers or smart controllers and electrically actuated zone valves, so that different blocks of the field can be irrigated in sequence without manual intervention. The configuration is also referred to as valve-zone control.
Principle
A central controller switches power to solenoid-operated zone valves, opening one block at a time while the upstream pump or pressurised line stays active. Each zone receives a programmed run-time, and irrigation can be scheduled by clock or triggered by soil-moisture sensor input. The same architecture supports automated Fertigation by switching an injector pump on for part of the irrigation cycle.
Implementation
Standard zone valves are 24 VAC solenoids in two-way or three-way configuration. Controllers range from simple multi-station timers to IoT-enabled units that read wireless soil-moisture sensors and trigger valves remotely. ICAR-CIAE Bhopal has developed IoT-enabled drip prototypes that integrate sensor input with valve actuation. A typical orchard or block layout may use six or more independently controlled zones connected to a common header.
Adoption context
Automation suits orchards and larger commercial holdings where manual valve trips across many zones consume significant labour. Industry field data report up to 30% water and fertiliser savings over manually scheduled drip, and ICAR trials show higher water-use efficiency and yield than flood irrigation.
Limitations
Capital cost rises sharply over a manually operated drip system because of controllers, solenoid valves, wiring and sensors. Reliable mains or solar power and surge protection are required at the controller cabinet. As with any drip layout, emitters remain vulnerable to clogging; see Drip Emitter Clogging.
