Organic / Molasses-Based Potash

Organic potash is a category of potassium-rich fertilisers derived from sugar-industry co-products (such as potash of molasses and vinasse-based granules) and from seaweed-based granular formulations. Marketed as a chloride-free, soil-health-friendly alternative to Muriate Of Potash (MOP, KCl), the category is positioned for crops sensitive to chloride or for growers prioritising soil organic-matter additions alongside K nutrition.

Composition

A representative product (Coromandel Gromor Bhoo Aushadh) carries approximately 14.5% K2O alongside calcium, magnesium and sulphur in a granular matrix. The total K2O concentration is well below that of MOP (60%), reflecting the organic origin and the secondary-nutrient load. Formulations vary by manufacturer; molasses-derived products carry residual sugars and organic acids, while seaweed-based granules carry trace bioactive compounds from the source algae.

Mode of action

Once applied, the granule disintegrates and releases potassium ions over the season, supplemented by Ca, Mg and S. The slower release pattern compared with MOP gives a more sustained K supply, which suits long-duration crops. The chloride-free composition is the key technical advantage: chloride-sensitive crops including tobacco, grapes and certain fruit varieties suffer leaf scorch and quality losses from KCl-derived K but tolerate organic potash without symptoms.

Target use and dose

Applied as a basal at planting and as side-dressings during the crop cycle, with the total dose set to meet seasonal K demand at the product's actual K2O concentration. The lower K density means physically larger applications than the MOP equivalent. The category is positioned for sugarcane, banana, fruit crops, vegetables and chloride-sensitive specialty crops.

Subsidy and regulation

Notified under the FCO mixture-fertiliser schedule. Subsidy treatment varies by formulation; products that meet the NBS phosphatic/potassic eligibility threshold receive per-tonne K2O subsidy, while value-added blends pass costs through at retail.
