Potato (Solanum tuberosum)

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is India's most important non-cereal staple, with 51.3 million t harvested from 2.16 million ha in 2019-20 (avg 23.77 t/ha), accounting for ~11.3% of global area and 12.5% of global production.

Cultivation and adoption

ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute, Shimla (established 1949 at Patna, shifted to Shimla 1956) is the mandate institute and has released 69 Kufri varieties for plains, hills and processing, including chip-processing varieties Kufri Chipsona-1/2/3, Frysona, Himsona.
