Apple rootstocks (M-9, M-26, MM-106, MM-111)

Clonal apple rootstocks control tree vigour, precocity, anchorage and disease tolerance independently of the fruiting scion. India's commercial apple industry has shifted progressively from seedling crabapple (highly vigorous, late-bearing) to a series of Malling (M) and Malling-Merton (MM) clonal rootstocks bred at the East Malling Research Station, England. ICAR-CITH Srinagar and HRRS Mashobra have evaluated all major Malling and Geneva series rootstocks for the Kashmir and HP belts and recommend a graded sequence based on planting density and soil depth.

Vigour and planting density

  • M-9 is the standard dwarfing rootstock for HDP Italian-system orchards (2,000-3,000 trees/ha). Trees come into bearing in year 2-3 and reach full production by year 5. Yields of 50-70 t/ha are achievable.
  • M-26 is semi-dwarfing and used for medium-density blocks (1,000-1,500 trees/ha). It tolerates slightly shallower soils than M-9 and needs less aggressive trellising.
  • MM-106 is the standard semi-vigorous rootstock for established Kashmir and HP orchards (400-600 trees/ha). It performs well on average-fertility soils and tolerates light replant problems. Highly susceptible to Phytophthora collar rot on poorly drained sites.
  • MM-111 is vigorous, well-anchored and drought-tolerant. Suited to marginal hill soils, late-bearing varieties and dry-belt apple expansion (lower Shimla, Kangra, lower Uri).

Disease and pest tolerance

All MM-series clones carry resistance to woolly apple aphid (Eriosoma lanigerum) — the defining advantage of the Malling-Merton series over straight Malling clones. M-9 and M-26 are susceptible to woolly aphid and to fire blight (Erwinia amylovora), which is significant given the fire-blight quarantine concern in north India. Newer Geneva series (G.11, G.41, G.935) combine M-9 dwarfing with woolly-aphid and fire-blight resistance and are under multi-location trial by ICAR-CITH.

  • High-density Italian system with trellis on deep loam: M-9
  • Medium-density block with light trellis or stake: M-26
  • Standard freestanding orchard, replant ground: MM-106
  • Slope, marginal soil, dry belt, vigorous scion: MM-111
  • Heritage cultivar revival (e.g. Ambri): seedling crab for longevity

Limitations

Clonal rootstocks are propagated by stool layering — quality nursery supply is the limiting factor in India. Genuine certified material from ICAR-CITH or HRRS Mashobra is recommended; spurious "M-9" material from unaccredited nurseries is a frequent cause of HDP failure.
