Integrated farming system (vegetables + dairy + poultry + fish)
The vegetables-dairy-poultry-fish IFS is a specific sub-template of the broader Integrated Farming System that pairs intensive vegetable cultivation with dairy, poultry and a fishpond on a small to medium holding. The combination is widely demonstrated under ICAR-IIFSR Modipuram's AICRP-IFS network as a template for diversified smallholder farms with assured irrigation.
Principle
Each component subsidises the others. Cow urine and dung feed jeevamrutham preparations or biogas digesters used to fertilise the vegetable block. Fishpond effluent irrigates and supplies dissolved N and P to the vegetables and the pond-bund crops; banana or papaya on the pond dyke shade the water and stabilise the embankment. Poultry litter composts into orchard or vegetable manure, and crop residues feed dairy cows. The closed loop reduces purchased input cost and stabilises household income across the year.
Implementation
ICAR-IIFSR Modipuram coordinates demonstrations of the model through 42 on-station and 32 on-farm IFS centres nationally. The 51 IFS/IOFS models released by IIFSR over 2010-20 include configurations specific to this template, with location-specific sizing of each component. Typical layouts on 1-2 ha holdings allocate 40-60 percent of the area to vegetables, 10-20 percent to pond, and the remainder to dairy shed and poultry pens with adjacent fodder plots.
Adoption context
The format is most successful on irrigated peri-urban holdings where vegetables earn high gross returns and milk, eggs and fish can be sold locally without elaborate cold chain. Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and parts of Karnataka have active extension demonstrations.
Limitations
Capital requirements for pond construction, dairy shed and poultry housing are well above single-enterprise farming. Labour intensity is high because daily attention is required across all components. Disease management across crops, livestock, poultry and fish requires a broad skill base that may exceed individual farmer capacity.
