Scaleless Hay/Straw Baler
A tractor-PTO straw baler picks up windrowed paddy or wheat straw and forms bound round or rectangular bales for storage, transport and downstream use as fodder, mulch, mushroom substrate or industrial fibre. It is the principal alternative to in-field burning of paddy stubble after a Combine Harvester Paddy pass.
Function
A pickup reel lifts the windrow off the ground onto a conveyor that feeds the bale chamber. In a round baler, the straw is rolled between rubber belts until a target diameter is reached; in a square baler, a plunger compresses the straw into rectangular bales. Twine knotters bind the finished bale before discharge.
Design and specifications
Round balers such as the Redlands SBA 330 work with 45+ HP tractors at 540 RPM PTO. Square balers, including the Fieldking FKSB-511 and New Holland BC5060, need 50+ HP and produce 30-40 bales per hour. Bale weight, density and dimensions are model-specific. ICAR-CIAE Bhopal develops and evaluates tractor-operated paddy-straw balers under the AICRP-FIM network.
Operation
After harvest with a combine, the loose straw is raked into windrows by a separate rake implement. The baler then traverses the windrows, picking up and compressing the straw. Bales are discharged onto the field and later loaded by trailer for off-site use. The technology is central to the strategy for reducing paddy stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana.
Subsidy and adoption
The baler is on the SMAM subsidy list as part of crop-residue-management equipment, alongside the Tractor Slasher and the Disc Rotavator. Custom-hiring through CHCs (Agri Machinery Dealer Ecosystem) is the dominant access mode for smallholders.
