Off-season watermelon on plastic mulch + drip
Off-season watermelon production using plastic mulch and drip irrigation is an established commercial system in India for shifting the harvest window outside the peak May-June arrival flush, when prices are typically low. ICAR-IIHR's KVK extension network has documented multiple-cropping schedules built around this system.
Key characteristics
- System: plastic mulch (often black or silver-black laminate) over drip-irrigated raised beds
- Drip layout: drip tube placed 4-5 inches from bed centre and 1-2 inches deep with emitters facing upward
- Benefits: earlier crop establishment, higher yield, better fruit quality and reduced weed and disease pressure under high-rainfall risk
- Scheduling: example off-season window of May planting for July harvest, at a premium over the in-season market
Cultivation
Beds are formed and drip lines installed before mulch is laid. The mulch is anchored by burying the edges in shallow trenches. Hot-water-treated, hybrid seedlings are planted through holes punched in the mulch at the recommended spacing (around 1.5-2 m between plants and 2-3 m between rows depending on variety and vigour). Fertigation through the drip system delivers N, P and K in calibrated splits across stages. Stage-tuned irrigation (Watermelon Fruit Set Water Management), including the standard water cut-off at fruit set and ripening, is integrated into the schedule.
Pest and disease profile
The principal problems are powdery mildew, downy mildew, fruit fly, melon thrips, aphids (which also transmit cucurbit viruses) and Fusarium wilt. Plastic mulch reduces soil splash and limits early-season weed competition; drip irrigation keeps foliage dry and lowers fungal disease pressure compared with flood or sprinkler systems.
Adoption context
The system is now standard in commercial watermelon plantings across Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, with multiple cropping cycles per year reported by ICAR KVK case studies. It enables off-season harvest at price premiums and is paired with hybrid seed (Sugar Baby, Saraswati, Madhu and other commercial F1 hybrids) selected for size, sugar and shelf life.
