Summer (off-season) tomato cultivation
Summer or off-season tomato cultivation is the practice of producing tomato (Tomato Crop) during the April-August window when most of the country's open-field production has ended and prices are at their seasonal peak. It is enabled by a combination of regional micro-climates (cool hill belts in south India) and protected structures (shade-nets and naturally ventilated polyhouses) that moderate the high summer temperatures and biotic pressure that otherwise prevent open-field cultivation.
Principle
Tomato fruit set falls sharply above 30-32 degC, and disease pressure from whitefly-borne leaf curl (Tomato Leaf Curl Virus) and the blight complex (Tomato Early Late Blight) peaks in the rainy months. Off-season production combines cooler ambient temperatures with insect-excluding nets and shade to keep crops viable when commodity tomato is scarce, capturing a price premium.
Implementation
In south India the Madanapalle revenue division of Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh, sustains supply throughout summer thanks to a moderate hill climate where temperatures rarely exceed 30 degC. Published net-house trials recommend 35-50% shade nets with a paired-row layout (80 x 40 x 60 cm) and fertigated NK schedules. Among shade-net colours tested, red 50% shade-nets gave the highest yields, while 75% green nets gave the poorest. Hybrid heat-tolerant cultivars are typically chosen.
Adoption context
Madanapalle has emerged as the country's largest summer tomato source, with truck movement to Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai during the lean months. Net-house off-season cultivation is documented in ICAR and UAS-Bengaluru extension literature and is supported under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) where structures qualify.
Limitations
Capital cost of shade-net houses is substantial, and the system still depends on rainfall patterns and disease pressure outside the structure. Off-season prices fluctuate widely.
