Elephant foot yam (Amorphophallus paeoniifolius (Dennst.) Nicolson) is a tropical tuber crop grown in AP, West Bengal, Gujarat, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, UP and Jharkhand. ICAR-Central Tuber Crops Research Institute, Thiruvananthapuram (est. 1963) is the mandate institute.

Cultivation and adoption

CTCRI's Sree Padma cultivar yields up to 42 t/ha against a crop potential of 100 t/ha. The crop is a 6-9 month long-duration tuber requiring warm humid 30-35 degC, 1000-1500 mm well-distributed rainfall, and well-drained sandy loam soils.
