Staggered Planting for Year-Round Cane Supply
Staggered planting of sugarcane - sowing successive setts over autumn (October-November), spring (February-March) and special-Adsali (Maharashtra, 18-month) windows - is recommended by ICAR-SBI Coimbatore and ICAR-IISR Lucknow to give mills a year-round cane supply, balance peak labour demand at planting and harvest, and stabilize sucrose recovery.
Key parameters
- Windows: Autumn (Oct-Nov), Spring (Feb-Mar), Adsali (Jul-Aug, 18-month)
- Purpose: year-round cane supply to mills; even labour spread; sucrose stability
- Season Fit: early/mid/late Co varieties matched to planting window
Implementation and adoption
Each window favours different varieties (early CO 0238, mid-late Co 86032) and lengthens the crushing season to 5-6 months.
