Tractor-Mounted Sprayer (Boom / Vyper)

A tractor-mounted boom sprayer is a three-point-linkage plant-protection implement with a large central tank, a PTO-driven HTP pump and a long horizontal boom carrying multiple nozzles. It is the standard large-area plant-protection unit for paddy, cotton, soybean, wheat and pulse field-crop operations.

Function

A horizontal triplex (HTP) pump driven by the tractor PTO at 500-600 rpm draws spray liquid from the tank, regulates pressure through a control valve, and delivers it through anti-drip nozzles spaced uniformly along the boom. The boom holds the nozzles at a fixed height above the canopy, producing a continuous spray strip equal to the boom width.

Design and specifications

A common Indian configuration is a 500-litre tank with a 2-5 kW HTP pump, 14-16 anti-drip nozzles on a 6-12 metre hydraulic boom, and an effective spray swath of 8-9 m. Tank sizes range from 200 to 1,000 litres. The implement mounts on the tractor's three-point linkage; the boom folds for transport.

Operation

The operator drives at a steady ground speed matched to the desired volume per acre. Boom height is adjusted with the lift arms to maintain nozzle clearance above the canopy. Compared with an Agri Drone Sprayer, the tractor boom sprayer applies much higher water volumes per acre and gives better penetration in dense field crops, but cannot enter waterlogged paddy or tall lodged canopies. It is the workhorse companion to the Combine Harvester Paddy in large field-crop systems.

Subsidy and adoption

ICAR-CIAE Bhopal evaluates such sprayers through AICRP on Farm Implements and Machinery. The unit is SMAM-subsidy eligible when sourced from a registered dealer (Agri Machinery Dealer Ecosystem) and is widely owned by CHCs.
