Blackgram (Vigna mungo)

Blackgram or urd (Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper) is a warm-season pulse crop of which India is the world's largest producer with ~3 million hectares. ICAR-Indian Institute of Pulses Research, Kanpur curates ~829 accessions and has coordinated release of over 85 varieties together with SAUs.

Cultivation and adoption

Average seed yield is 350-800 kg/ha, reaching 1500-2500 kg/ha under good management. Foundation varieties T 9, T 27, T 77, ADT 1 and Co 1 underpin most modern cultivars.
