Kadiri Amaravati groundnut
Kadiri Amaravati is a Spanish-bunch groundnut variety bred at the Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS) Kadiri under ANGRAU. It is one of the routine breeder-seed groundnut varieties produced at Kadiri each season - listed alongside K-6, K-9, Kadiri Lepakshi, Dharani, Narayani and Kadiri Harithandhra - and is sown across the Andhra Pradesh groundnut belt.
Key characteristics
- Breeder: ANGRAU, RARS Kadiri
- Type: Spanish bunch (erect habit)
- Duration: 105-115 days (kharif)
- Pod yield: 18-22 q/ha (1800-2200 kg/ha) rainfed; higher under irrigation
- Shelling: ~70%
- Reaction: tolerant to leaf spot; moderately drought tolerant
Cultivation zones
ANGRAU recommends Kadiri Amaravati for the rainfed kharif tract of Anantapuramu, Sri Sathya Sai, Annamayya, YSR Kadapa, Chittoor and Tirupati districts of Andhra Pradesh, with extension to similar southern Karnataka tracts. It is also sown in rabi-summer under irrigation in parts of Kurnool, Nandyal and Prakasam. Like other RARS-Kadiri Spanish bunch types, it is bred for the semi-arid Rayalaseema agro-climatic zone and matures within the available kharif rainfall window.
Pests, diseases and management
Kadiri Amaravati shows field tolerance to early (Cercospora arachidicola) and late (Cercosporidium personatum) leaf spot. The standard ICAR-DGR/AICRP-Groundnut fungicide advisory applies in disease-prone years - mancozeb 0.25% or carbendazim 0.1% at 30 and 45 DAS, switching to hexaconazole 0.1% or tebuconazole+trifloxystrobin where late leaf spot pressure is severe. Sucking pests (jassid, thrips, aphid) are managed by need-based imidacloprid 17.8 SL 0.3 ml/L or dimethoate 30 EC 0.03%. Stem rot (Sclerotium rolfsii) under continuous monocropping is mitigated by Trichoderma seed treatment 8 g/kg and gypsum 500 kg/ha at peg initiation. Peanut bud necrosis disease (PBND), spread by thrips, is the main viral problem in kharif - early sowing and thrips control reduce risk.
Usage and adoption
ANGRAU's package of practices recommends a seed rate of 110-125 kg/ha kernels at 30 x 10 cm spacing, basal fertiliser 20:40:50 kg NPK/ha, and gypsum 500 kg/ha at flowering. Harvest at 80-85% pod maturity to keep kernel quality and limit aflatoxin contamination. As a regularly multiplied ANGRAU variety, Kadiri Amaravati certified seed is available through APSSDC and AP Seeds outlets in Anantapuramu, Hindupur and Kadiri.
