Jassid (Empoasca kerri) in groundnut

Empoasca kerri Pruthi is a major sucking pest of kharif groundnut, peaking in September-October across AP, Telangana, Karnataka and Gujarat. Adults and nymphs cause leaf hopper burn - discolouration, marginal yellowing and cup-shaped wrinkling that stunts plants.

Identification and biology

  • Pest: Empoasca kerri Pruthi (Cicadellidae)
  • Peak: September-October in kharif crop
  • Resistant Varieties: Girnar-2, Kadiri-7, Kadiri-8, Kalahasti, Harithandhra, Pratap Raj Mungphali
  • Chemical Control: dimethoate 0.03%, imidacloprid 0.3 ml/L, methyl-o-demeton

Management

ICAR-DGR Junagadh and AICRP-Groundnut recommend resistant varieties (Girnar-2, Kadiri-7, Kadiri-8, Kalahasti, Harithandhra), early sowing, and need-based sprays of dimethoate 30 EC 0.03%, monocrotophos 36 SL 0.04% (where permitted), or imidacloprid 17.8 SL 0.3 ml/L. Intercropping with pearl millet reduces colonisation.
