Bt cotton (Bollgard-II)

బీటీ పత్తి (బోల్‌గార్డ్-II)

Bollgard-II (BG-II) అనేది transgenic పత్తి trait — Bacillus thuringiensis అనే నేల బ్యాక్టీరియా నుండి తీసిన Cry1Ac, Cry2Ab అనే రెండు పురుగు మందు ప్రోటీన్‌లను ఇది వ్యక్తపరుస్తుంది. ఒకే gene ఉన్న Bollgard-I (BG-I) తర్వాత Mahyco-Monsanto Biotech ఈ stacked event ను రూపొందించారు. భారతీయ commercial పత్తి హైబ్రిడ్‌లలో ఇదే ఇప్పుడు ఆధిపత్యంలో ఉన్న Bt trait.

కూర్పు, పనిచేసే విధానం

పత్తి కణజాలంలో Cry1Ac, Cry2Ab రెండు ప్రోటీన్‌లు constantly వ్యక్తమవుతాయి. lepidopteran లార్వా midgut లో నిర్దిష్ట receptors తో bind అయి, pore formation, gut paralysis కలిగించి మరణానికి దారితీస్తాయి. Cry1Ac తో పాటు Cry2Ab ను stack చేయడంలో ఉద్దేశం — రెండు వేర్వేరు mode of action లు ఉండి, పురుగుల్లో resistance రాకుండా ఆలస్యం చేయడం.

లక్ష్య పురుగులు

BG-II ముఖ్యంగా పత్తి lepidopteran bollworm complex పై పనిచేస్తుంది — అమెరికన్ bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera), spotted bollworm, Pink Bollworm, Spodoptera. రసం పీల్చే పురుగులపై (Sucking Pest Complex Cotton, Jassid Leafhopper Cotton, Whitefly In Cotton Chilli) లేదా lepidopteran కాని పురుగులపై ఇది పనిచేయదు — వాటికి సాధారణ పురుగు మందు ప్రోగ్రామ్‌లు అవసరం.

భారత్‌లో రెగ్యులేటరీ స్థితి

BG-I కు 2002 లో Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) commercial సాగుకు ఆమోదం ఇచ్చింది; BG-II కు 2006 మధ్యలో ఆమోదం వచ్చింది. భారత్‌లో ఇప్పటివరకు ఈ రెండే transgenic పత్తి events ఆమోదం పొందాయి — 2006 తర్వాత కొత్త GM పత్తి event ఏదీ ఆమోదం పొందలేదు. Roundup Ready Flex వంటి herbicide-tolerant stacks ఇంకా ఆమోదం పొందలేదు (Roundup Ready Cotton Regulatory చూడండి).

రెసిస్టెన్స్, నిర్వహణ

భారతీయ pink bollworm జనాభాలో Cry1Ac కు resistance 2009 ప్రాంతంలో, Cry1Ac+Cry2Ab stack కు resistance 2014-15 ప్రాంతంలో వచ్చింది — దీనివల్ల ఈ పురుగుపై BG-II రక్షణ తగ్గింది. resistance ఆలస్యం చేయడానికి structured refuge, తర్వాత refuge-in-bag (Refuge In Bag Cotton) వంటి insect-resistance-management వ్యూహాలు తప్పనిసరి చేశారు.
