పత్తిలో topping / pinching
Topping — de-topping, nipping లేదా pinching అని కూడా అంటారు — పత్తి మొక్క apical bud (పైకొన మొగ్గ) ను చేతితో తీసేయడం. దీనివల్ల apical dominance రిలీజ్ అవుతుంది, మొక్క నిలువుగా పెరగడం ఆగుతుంది, శక్తి sympodial (కాయ ఇచ్చే) కొమ్మలకు, కాయలకు మళ్లుతుంది. high-density planting system కు ఇది ముఖ్యమైన పూరక ఆపరేషన్.
సూత్రం
పత్తిలో apical dominance lateral branching ను అణిచిపెడుతుంది. terminal bud తీసేస్తే హార్మోన్ సంకేతాలు, photosynthate ఉన్న, కొత్త sympodial కొమ్మలకు మళ్లుతాయి. chlormequat chloride (gibberellin-biosynthesis inhibitor) వంటి రసాయన canopy regulators తో కలిపి topping చేస్తే — compact, determinate-like canopy వస్తుంది, కాయ formation కేంద్రీకృతం అవుతుంది.
అమలు
మొక్క సుమారు 90-100 సెం.మీ. ఎత్తుకు చేరినప్పుడు ప్రధాన కాండ pైకొనను చేతితో లేదా topping implement తో తీసేస్తారు. భారతీయ HDPS ట్రయల్లలో topping + chlormequat-chloride స్ప్రే కలిపితే — ఒక్కో మొక్కకు 20-21 sympodial కొమ్మలు, దాదాపు 36 కాయలు, seed cotton దిగుబడి దాదాపు 1,635 kg/ha వచ్చింది. ప్రధాన కాండపై తగినన్ని sympodial కొమ్మలు ఏర్పడిన తర్వాత, నిలువు పెరుగుదల ఎక్కువ కాకముందే — ఈ సరైన సమయంలో చేయాలి.
వాడకం
CICR సిఫార్సు చేసిన HDPS ప్యాకేజీలో (High Density Planting System Cotton) topping ఒక ముఖ్యమైన భాగం. దగ్గర row spacing తో compact రకాల్లో దీని వాడకం పెరుగుతోంది (Cotton Spacing Row Options). పంట కాల పరిమాణం తగ్గుతుంది, canopy లో వెలుతురు, గాలి బాగా వెళతాయి, sympodial overlap తగ్గుతుంది. 2-pick లేదా యాంత్రిక harvest కు అనుకూలమైన plant architecture తయారవుతుంది — picking కూలీలు తక్కువగా ఉన్నచోట ఇది ముఖ్యం (Cotton Picking Labour).
పరిమితులు
సాంప్రదాయ చిన్న రైతుల వద్ద topping కు ఎక్కువ కూలీ అవసరం, టైమింగ్ ఖచ్చితంగా ఉండాలి. ముందుగానే topping చేస్తే కాయల సంఖ్య తగ్గుతుంది; ఆలస్యంగా చేస్తే canopy-management లాభం పోతుంది. ఎక్కువ నీటిపారుదల కింద indeterminate హైబ్రిడ్లలో axillary buds నుండి regrowth వచ్చి ఆపరేషన్ ప్రభావం కొంత తగ్గించవచ్చు.
